I was very honoured with the result at the ANB Sydney Titles – winning first place in the Figure Novice Open Class, Figure Tall Class and Overall Women’s Champion - especially considering that this was my first ever figure competition! I have only ever competed in the NABBA federation Australian Championships in 2006 in the Sports Model division where I took out first place as well in the Couples division.
I have an immense passion and interest in the human body and physical pursuit, hence I turned it into a career by studying a Bachelor of Health Science in Human Movement. I have been fitness instructing group exercise classes, predominantly Bodypump, RPM for over 10 years as well as Pad Boxing and BodyAttack along the way. I have selected to instruct these programs because of the nature of the classes and the love I have for these styles of training i.e., original barbell workout dedicated to sculpting, endorphin high achieved from interval cycle training as well as the athleticism, co-ordination and adrenalin rush delivered by all programs. My most loved interests entail training and inspiring others as well as growing and continually improving physically and mentally, music, travel, indulging in the pleasures of life such as good food/fine dining and a good drop of red! As well as fashion, dancing, having a good laugh, the beach and physical pursuit not to mention living life to the fullest each day.
I have played competitive sports for as long as I can remember including State League Soccer and Jin Wu Koon Shaolin Double Dragon Kung Fu Martial Arts. From a very young age I admired and truly appreciated the commitment and focus of bodybuilders/sculptors and athletes alike. It seemed like a very distant dream to be able to execute competition preparation and the actual show due to other commitments in life including business (Healthcare Territory Manager) Fitness Instructing as well as maintaining a personal life balance. I felt as though the above would hinder a substantial amount of comp preparation as my role entails ample travel on a daily basis followed by instructing classes in the evenings and Saturday mornings, which did not allow me much free time to train specifically for comp requirements and meal preparation as well as rest and recovery.
I’m a true believer that 3 types of personalities exist those that talk about making things happen and what they are going to do but it never transpires, those that make things happen and accomplish their goals and finally those that stand around and wonder what just happened.
I’ve always had a very driven and determined passionate personality and when I heard of the upcoming ANB Sydney Comp in May, I decided to remain within the essence of my personality and to make it happen! My Uncle Alan Bourel (Former Mr Oceania Novice & Light Heavyweight 1986, Mr Sydney Heavyweight & Overall 1990, East Coast Championships 2nd Place Heavyweight 1990, Australasia 2nd Place Heavyweight 1990) was a strong influence (even though he was a little too strict at times!) who provided ample support & guidance right through and he together with his wife never gave up believing in my potential for the sport which meant the world to me as I was facing a lot of hardship in other aspects of my personal life during the course of the prep.
The sport of Bodybuilding has really helped me to grow mentally not just physically and I have found that I apply many of the skills achieved to everyday life in general, especially the mental discipline aspect whilst remaining positive. It has shown me that you can really achieve anything if you remain dedicated and have a true burning desire for what you want to achieve, for me it was remaining organised especially with my lifestyle and remaining flexible yet committed, focused and positive which allowed me to get on stage and accomplish my dream of becoming a competitive Bodybuilder (Figure) with a wonderful outcome, winning 3 titles in the one day including Overall Champion!
