I have always been interested in weight training.

Photo’s of bodybuilders always fascinated me

I had the usual bullworker, house bricks on the end of broom sticks etc

But nutrition was a dirty word in 1989 I walked into a bodybuilding supply store in Penrith and I was hooked, I think I asked the guy about 10,000 questions without taking a breath anyway we became friends and still are to this day, I started training correctly eating correctly and suddenly the changes started to materialize.

Then he showed me the benefits of dieting so I depleted and we took some photos and I thought I was the greatest.

Well a couple of years passed and it was time to enter my first show the Mr. Western Suburbs masters division in which I took out third place and well the old cliché next to my children being born this was the greatest plus I had seen my first pro bodybuilder Garry Strydom and again I was hooked many competitions followed from northern Nsw right up to Australasian where again I placed 2nd in the masters division.

By the way I was so impressed with the bodybuilding store in Penrith I bought it (Australian Muscle)

Then like all true bodybuilder I became disillusioned with it and had a rest for approximately 15years although I keep in touch with all my friends

Now to the good part

Don’t ask me why but October 2006 I attended the ANB Nationals at the Marconi club I hadn’t been to a show in ages years but for some unknown reason I said to my mate lets go and have a look at a show and he said yea lets go well we rocked on up to the show and most of the usual faces were still there from Craig Reynolds at the door to Kevin riley and Robert Powell the president whom I hadn’t seen in a while ( did I mention he owned the bodybuilding store I bought in Penrith)

Well the show started and we were generously seated in the VIP section mark was rapped he had never been this close to the stage before well it wasn’t long before a good friend and mc Mr. Ron Ziemiecki told the crowd that I was in the audience, and stated that if I wasn’t so fat I could be on the stage again

Well I came home that night and told the story to my partner Vicki and made a promise to my self that I would compete at the following ANB nationals (I can hear the rocky theme playing now) well I dug out all my old diaries etc and got to work

At this stage I was 5ft 5inches tall weighing 96kgs with approx 98% body fat and 2% water anyway it was on.

First my diet that was the hardest to change.

Second was aerobic activity also hard at first but as time went by became easier to manage.

Third, the regular training that was easier as my mate mark said if I joined the gym he would too and train with me, so off we went to

Penrith Elite X-treme training centre in Penrith
(Check it out if you can penrithelite.com.au)

Thanks to the owner Mr. Tama Te Huna for his patience and assistance So here we were training six days a week starting at 7pm Monday to Friday.

Cardio at the start was long walk on Sunday mornings and plenty of recovery everything seemed much harder to do then it did approx 15 years ago.

Mark and I were the only ones who knew of my plans to compete again.

Ok training dieting aerobics all working together and the old body shape started to change and the more I changed the more motivated I became to keep going.

Sunday mornings my partner or my daughter would drive me 10ks from home drop me off and I would walk home.

Training was going well as was the diet now was time to up the cardio so treadmill time : here is the routine I employed 4 months out from the show.

5am wake up drink 1 glass of water 1 hour on the treadmill.

Get ready for work and work from 9am to 6pm.

Finish work pickup mark hit the gym by 7pm train till 8-8.30pm.

Home. Hit the treadmill again no less than 45minutes no more than 1hr.

Shower then bed Monday to Friday. Nothing Saturday and then Sunday big walk.

Here is a true story one morning I was so tired I dozed off on the treadmill and it threw me into the wall my partner said it was the funniest sight she had ever seen thanks Vicki.

Well I wont bore you, by now the day was approaching and it was a week before the nationals and the tanning process began and I was reminded why I hated it so much but now nothing was going to stop me from entering the show and surprise the mc

Well the big day came, my weight was now 71kgs and my six pack was now visible, needles to say I felt great.

And the look on Ron’s face was all I wanted to see regardless of the results I was a winner 12 months worth of work had come to a head.

I placed 4th in the grand masters over 50years of age and everything was great, so I dedicated that show to Mr. Ron Ziemiecki for stirring the competitive juices, thanks Ron

The 2008 national I dedicate to myself and my partner Vicki, see you all there in October 2008.

By the way a special thanks to my boss and friend Steve Perceval who was a positive reinforcement to me when I felt it was all too hard, thanks Steve.

Ron I hope this true story is of interest to others.

Cheers
See you at the Nationals in 2008
